Talking About The Universal Life Church

In 1959, the Reverend Kirby J. Hensley established the now well known religious organization, the Universal Life Church, sometimes referred to as the ULC. The objective when the church was founded was to allow the people involved with it to follow their own faith. Reverend Hensley, over time, had grown tired and a bit frustrated with the practices adhered to by the Pentecostal Church and had decided a change was in order. Today, the ULC has grown and grown, to the point that there are over 22 million members.

One of the things they offer is for a person of commitment and dedication to pursue becoming a minister at no cost to themselves. It was back in the 1960′s that many first made the decision to join up with the ULC. Evading having to do service in the military while the Vietnam War was ongoing was a motivational factor for many to pursue a ministry.

Accessing tax reliefs was another consideration that many also felt, besides getting drafted into the service. Unfortunately for these individuals however, they soon discovered that they were not in fact going to be exempt from the war or from any service. In addition, they would also not be exempt from any tax payments either. It would be only social security taxes that they would in fact not have to deal with. Only those ministers that from religious services earned their incomes would there be any exemptions.

The ULC has though continued to grow, and probably the biggest reason is its openness to allow those individuals from various backgrounds to apply for and attain ordination to puruse their own religious and spiritual beliefs.
