My Very First Road Trip: How Much Of An Eye Opener

It was 1987, during the summertime. Besides the fact that I had bought my Honda 550-four 2 years beforehand, I had never actually taken it out on a long excursion. The only place I had ever taken my motorbike was to and from my job and around the town because of time constraints and personal circumstances. But early on a Monday morning my brother called me on the phone and invited me on an extended road trip. How could I pass it up?

A half-hour later he was at my door asking if I was ready to go. He stood there with leather gloves in hand and completely new riding glasses over his eyes and looked very pleased with himself. When I asked about his glasses I discovered that they had cost quite a bit more than what I could have purchased them.

However, he did warn me that it was not a good idea to wear normal sunglasses when riding a motorbike but because I was young and knew it all, I ignored his advice.

Guess what? I was wrong.

Without any riding glasses, I found it to be a real eye opener as I travelled along the highway at 65mph. Or should I say, an “eye closer”~In fact, I should really say that it was a genuine ‘eye closer’~However, the fact is that it was more of an eye closer than an eye opener. Because I only had standard sunglasses on, I discovered that my eyes started to dry up pretty quickly as the wind found its way over the rims. On top of that, I found out that bugs, pebbles and other dirt were still getting me despite me wearing glasses.

So after putting up with this for approximately 50 miles, I had made a decision that I needed my own pair of riding glasses and was searching desperately for a place where we could get off the interstate.

By the end of that day I was the proud owner of a new pair of riding glasses. And if I ever planned to ride faster than 55mph again, I made sure I had these glasses with me. A couple of years later, I sold my bike and made a point of advising the buyer to purchase a great pair of riding glasses. Obviously I don’t know if he took my advice but I hope he did not have to discover the way I did.
